JOSEPH E. MARCY PH.D.
Interim Department Head, Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise Department Professor, Food Science and Technology Department Virginia TechJoe Marcy received his B.S. and M.S. in Food Technology from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in Food Science. Dr. Marcy joined the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department of the University of Florida in 1979 conducting research on new processing and packaging methods for citrus products. In 1984, Joe joined Rampart Packaging Inc., Williamsburg, Virginia as senior food technologist. He was later promoted to business development manager with responsibilities for North America and Western Europe.
In addition to teaching and research activities in the Food Science and Technology Department, Joe is currently the Interim Department Head for the Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise Department. Since joining the Food Science and Technology Department at Virginia Tech in 1989, Joe has continued his research interest into food processing methods, packaging integrity testing, food preservation and food chemistry. Joe teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in food processing and food packaging and is the author of numerous scientific publications in Food Science. Joe is the past chair of the Institute of Food Technologist, Food Packaging Division and is the chair of the Higher Education Committee. Dr. Marcy has been the recipient of both teaching and research awards from Virginia Tech.
